What are Joint Injections?

The injections typically contain a combination of a local anesthetic (such as lidocaine or bupivacaine) to provide immediate pain relief and a corticosteroid medication (such as cortisone) to reduce inflammation and swelling in the joint.

Injections can provide significant relief for weeks to months. The corticosteroid medication in the injection works to reduce inflammation in the joint, which often leads to decreased pain and improved function.
